Crunchie - hit and miss?

Firstly I'd like to say what a great forum this is and how helpful it has been.

Crunchie seems to be a great app but sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn't. It works every time in that it produces an AVI file but 80% of the time the resulting AVI file is only around 20 to 70 MB. The MPG file it produces is always nearly as big as the original DVRMS file.

For example I tried to crunch 3 episodes of Empire and 1 worked perfectly (470 MB) but the other two were around 60MB and only the first 10 mins or so.

Most of the time Crunchie will just produce a small AVI and then switch it self off. All of the files I try and cruch have been viewed first and all play perfectly. Most are SD content however the perfect Empire episode was HD.

Im using DVRMS files and RU2. I'd really like to get this right as Crunchie would have to be one of the most usefull programs ever! Even though I have loads of drive space we like to burn the AVIs to DVD and watch them on a Pioneer 686 in the bedroom.

I would also like to say that I am amazed how good MCE is. I've had it now for about 2 months and it is so user friendly that my girlfriend uses it with ease and we now have no need for the STB or the DVD player. We have it connected to a 50" Fujitsu, Denon 2805 and VAF speakers and life is wonderful. The MCE remote switches the TV off and controls the volume on the amp faultlessly. Wish it could switch the amp on and off - maybe one day!

My over 60 parents were over the other night and would like me to build them a system as well. I thought at first this might not be a good idea but then if it was nice and stable they would probably be ok as they would leave the system as is and not put extra programs on and surf the net etc. Any one else set up a system for their parents? How did it go?

Cheers, Dean

Re: Crunchie - hit and miss?

Hi Dean,

I think yu'll find that your mpeg files don't play back correctly all the time.

Crunchie uses a program called DVRMSToolbox to convert the dvr-ms to mpeg before it can be converted to xvid format. Since RU2 DVRMSToolbox has had issues converting anything with AC3 audio to mpeg properly. As a result the files that Crunchie spilts out will either have no audio or finish prematurely.

Those few recordings on SD stations that have mpeg audio will still work fine.

That is why you are getting the results you are.

I'm waiting on babgvant from TGB to fix DVRMSToolbox before I can make Crunchie HD aware (it's presently only designed for SD content). Unfortunately even most SD shows have 2.0 channel AC3 audio and will fail with Crunchie.

Those of us who need to crunch a lot of files only use MCE with RU1.

Cheers,
Arkay.

So that's why I've been having trouble getting a vanilla MPEG file that I can edit!

Do you have any idea when DVRMSToolbox may be able to handle AC3? Alternatively do you know of any program that will provide a vanilla MPEG (or avi or whatever) file with audio from a DVR-MS file made under RU2?

Re: Crunchie - hit and miss?

babgvant suggested that he had it fixed and put up a dll on TGB last week to replace in the current version of the software. I tried iit, as many others did, and it doesn't work. The only person that reported success was Impact so maybe something on his machine is different.

I've left a message for babgvant suggesting that I send him some test clips but he hasn't answered (may be away for Christmas).

Unfortunately it'll take as long as it takes (and I've been trying to get this fixed since the first RU2 beta release that enabled AC3 way way back).

There's no other free program that I know of that can do it either.

VideoRedo apparently works but it's a commercial app.

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: Crunchie - hit and miss?

Hmmm, might just sit back and wait then. I have nothing urgent to edit (just some video clips for the wife, but they can sit as DVR-MS for a while). I was just tearing my hair out trying to find something and didn't realise it was a RU2 related thing. Now I know I can relax a little.

Re: Crunchie - hit and miss?

Thanks Arkay.

Gee thought I was posting on the "help with software forum" dont know how I ended up on this forum?

Anyway, so if I do another install of MCE I should leave out the RU2? Then I can crunch away?

Do I miss out on a lot of other stuff though?

Thanks for the reply and for developing the program, really appreciate it!

Dean

I moved it here because this is where arkay provides direct support for Crunchie and The Hibernator

You'll only miss out on HD and AC3. If neither of those things are a necessity for you then RU1+Crunchie will work fine

You may have to use a hacked dll to get your tuning right too.

Cheers,
Arkay.
