Just put the PC to sleep regardless, it will wake up if a recording is required and then go back to sleep afterward. (Assuming you have S3 sleep setup in the Bios and the various power settings in windows set correctly).

Hi AdrianW
Sounds great in theory but I am really reluctant to do this as I have had system stability issues if I leave the PC on for anything more than a couple of days.
If I am relying on VMC to record stuff for me without fail (while I am away for about 3 weeks), I only feel comfortable if the PC is turned off daily. If I get a system lockup or another issue, the PC is on, but serving no real purpose and not doing what I want it to - namely reliably recording TV while I'm not able to watch it.
Am I paranoid? Perhaps. Does it result in a (pretty) reliable VMC? For sure! Resetting every day means that if there is a problem, it is usually rectified by a reboot. If it was in hibernation mode, and hung, a reset is the only thing that will save you there (from my experience).
Another reason is that the PC is still chewing power for no real reason while it is in low power state. With a 700w power supply installed it is still chewing power as the PSU converts the power. Although the power draw is limited because all the drives, cards, process are running on little power, the hit is still there. Over a year, it all adds up
