I have to drive 30min to a nearest swimming pool in Sydney.
In USSR in small satellite town near Kiev we had 8 swimming pools with 3 Olympic size pools. For a population of 60,000.
In Kiev, I had 3 swilling pools - walking distance from my Uni camp.

We can be proud about elite swimmers here, but it does not do any good to general population health. We are happy and proud from the reclining chair with beer in our hand.

I love how heavily promoted it is to sit at TV and watch our athletes for hours on the off chance that them working hard gets you fit

That is the point, it costs money to get Gold. Mass sport is a casualty here

Interseting article and I tend to agree with the points he is making. Sadly his article will fall on deaf political ears and sport spending will go up at the expense of other, more vital tings such as health.

It's not good politics not to do well at the Olympics. Sport is, after all, the opiate of the proletariat.
