Disk imaging software

ok i use to use a program called ghost.Seeing now the htpc is setup, does anyone know of any good software to create an image of the hdd and restore it. SO if anything goes wrong i can simply reimage the partition and everything is good again rather than going through the reinstall process.

I've found DriveImageXML to be good. And it's FREE!!!

I have been using TrueImage without a problem until this evening. Needed to restore an image of my Study Vista PC until just refuses to do so. Black screen after TrueImage requests reboot.

I am changing over tomorrow to ShadowProtect which is what I use at work and never ever had a problem and use it daily.

Oh, well time to reinstall Vista and applications.

Re: Disk imaging software

TrueImage wont work with SB600 southbridge based SATA unless they are running in legacy mode!

Im thinking of trying the free gparted/clonezilla LiveCD for imaging but haven't gotten around to testing it.

Re: Disk imaging software

The latest version of Trueimage works with my SB600 based mobo, provided I unplug the MCE remote before doing a restore. Otherwise it hangs as described.

The other option is to boot from a rescue CD.

Re: Disk imaging software

I updated to the latest version of TrueImage Home 11 (was running the 1st Build) and was able to restore OK.

The Rescue disk that I had also wouldnt work. Anyway image restore and all is OK

Re: Disk imaging software

Did you run it from a boot CD such as BartPE?

I always run from that and have never had a problem. The DriveImageXML site has instuctions on how to include it on the BartPE CD.

Re: Disk imaging software

I successfully cloned a linux disk from one machine to another via a samba share using clonezilla last week. Worked like a charm but did require some manual intervention (in order to restore to a different partition scheme than where the image came from).

For imaging to network share to restore on the same machine it should work 100%.

Backup over the network took about 4 mins via gigabit lan and not a need for a spare disk or DVD burner anywhere.

Not as pretty as Acronis but the price is fantastic

Cheers,

Arkay.

Strange. Same thing happened to me this week as well. Using TrueImage for years without a problem, now I get black screen after reboot too. Could it be due to a windows update? (Doesn't load windows OS during restore though)
