AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says he has tried and failed to get the television broadcaster of tonight's Hawthorn-Geelong match to show the game live.
Channel Seven will show the game on a one hour-delay despite the game at the MCG being sold out.
Demetriou has told Fairfax Radio the AFL has spent several weeks trying to convince the network to broadcast the game live.
"Given it's a sell out and it doesn't happen enough for a home and away game on a Friday night, we've tried but we haven't been successful," he said.
Demetriou says the AFL plans to change an agreement so a similar situation will not happen in the future.
"We would do what we did in the last round of rights and hopefully put it out there as live football, people are starting to appreciate live sport all the time, short delays are OK, but I don't think long delays and replays work any more."

They're doing something similar during the Olympics with the Olyroos match. They're cutting off one game 15 minutes before the end, to show something or other, and interuppting another match for 30 minutes to show an announcement (not even an event).
Just watching the AFL on 10HD (yes, they show it live in Sydney) & had the ABC Grandstand commentary synched up (5.2 seconds delay). 10 minutes in to the first quarter, the picture starts to stagger & fade to a black screen (this was the coverage & not my VMC as the 10 logo remained - I've seen it before when 9 have had a blackout at the cricket) & when the solid picture came back, the delay had mysteriously come down to around 2-2.5 seconds. After a minute or so, they had another black screen & then suddenly it was back at +5.2 seconds.
Added to that, I watched last night's game on Foxtel (Main Event) & it was only 2.3 seconds behind the radio.
So, clearly a 5 second delay isn't necessary for the technology - one must conclude that they do it for a purpose & the only one I can think of is that it makes it that far behind the radio that you simply can't listen to the radio.
Oh, & if you're watching the rugby "live" on 7 tonight, remember the game will have been over for 5-10 minutes by the time you see the end.
Save my sport indeed.

I'm sure I read that all live broadcasts are delayed by 5 seconds to cover it, maybe that was after nipplegate (the superbowl), and it was in the US
Yeah, it's in the US - we're much more relaxed about that sort of thing here (fortunately).
I think "live" Big Brother "events" have been delayed for the last couple of years (at least), but it's not why they're doing it for sport.
An example of analogue vs digital delays: State of Origin - 9HD is usually right on 4.7 seconds behind 702, but it's about 4.3 behind Roy & HG (who call off 9 analogue).
I think they're just getting us used to a delay in the digital realm so that when analogue's gone, it will be open season.

They put the 5 second delay on all live telecasts so they can remove any naughty words, or other things..
Me thinks urban myth. I couldn't see someone with enough authority sitting with their "finger on the button" all that time - but I have been wrong before
