I decided today to have a play with XML guide data grabbers, sounded like I needed to have a look. Now the next move proves to be the most stupid I've made in a while, I download the software to the machine I was sitting in front of, my MCE server, no problem I've got backups if it all goes wrong ....
Well it did, I played and decided that I was done playing, time to remove the software. Well with the removal went my standard guide configuration. No worries, I'll just restore the TruImage so I don't stuff anything more up. TruImage from this morning restores, then the server fails to boot with a Windows Boot Manager error (now I'm getting worried ). So I insert the Vista disk, repair and it boots (phew - after a few goes), but my 6 x 750Gb RAID 5 is gone! A quick jaunt to Disk Manager and I find the drive letters and shares had gone, put them back, all OK.
Now I have the same server I had this morning, but have sweat out about 5 Kg because the WAF would have been through the floor if I'd really stuffed it! Moral of the story, move one keyboard and screen to the left and use the VMC development box for trying things out - HOW STUPID!

Best thing is to have 3 MCE boxes - Production, Quality and Development.
Or you can stop tinkering or have Acronis image taken before
All depends on your budget.

the worst part was I had the Acronis image from this morning, but the restore stuffed up the boot drive and then that snowballed to the drive allocations. On previous machines I've simply restored and been away, never seen this boot issue when restoring from an image for C:.
I don't think one should ever stop tinkering (clearly just do it on the right machine!)

I was becoming so paranoid about losing everything, not long ago I built another server from old bits, installed Win XP and it now mirrors my Media server once a day using a syc script.
Now if either one dies I won't be losing all that sweaty weight.

I'm a JBOD type of guy. All my content is stored on separate drives according to genre /type etc. 3 smallish system drives, 2 of which I don't bother backing up. The only one that does is the one that caps sat tv because of the rigmarole associated with analogue + digital EPG setup. To tell truth, I really am not hugely fussed about losing stuff any more. it's just telly, pics, bleh. . .

True, my main fear was losing the config that took so long to setup in the first place. While its backed up weekly using TruImage, I was near devastated when I went to use the image and it stuffed up the machine! I've had great success with TruImage previously and been a great supporter, to have it go wrong was just not good.
