PVR for the masses imminent. Play TV for Ps3 coming to Oz Q1/2009 :)

For those that may have missed the announcement >> Sony have now confimed that playTV tuner add on for the PS3 will be hitting UK Sep 10th. Due in Oz/Nz in Jan-Feb.

Sony is no stranger to DVR of course, with products like the (much too ahead of its time?) PSX, TiVo and their standard DVD and HDD Recorders.

A recent firmware upgrade has ensured that tv recording can occur concurrently whilst gaming.

Despite the freedoms(and hassles) MCE brings, if implemented well, and unplagued by bugs, this will surely be the leading PVR product for the gamer/HD enthusiast.

Plans for a new basic mce build I was contemplating have now been put on hold will...see how this pans out

I have a PS3 aswell

But i just build a new MC and its f**kin great!!! so far not a single bug. The abillity to game and record is pretty sweet though. I was holding out to get PlayTV but my main VMC Rig was just on its last legs and had to go...

No argument from me here, I love my MCE. But competition brings some improvements, as usually, and Sony has an excellent platform to challenge MS.

• Watch/Record TV
• Play Media files from SMB
• Play games
• Blu-Ray with HD sound

These are the building blocks of an entertainment centre.
If Sony will pull the finger and address SMB then together with Play TV it will be actually better than MCE as now PS3 gives me DTS-HD, MCE cannot.

They dont work on weekends .... Something to to with the cyber-button unions IIRC

I dont think the PS3 will become our "main PVR" simply because I dont want the missus and stepbrat wanting to watch <<insert stupid girly show>> when I'll be destroying stormtroopers with my crazy powers in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed This will be staying separate, with its own dedicated 1080p hdmi happy display.
