Whenever I get a new DVD for the family I always back it up. Somehow new ways are found in my house to destroy the undestroyable!
Anyway, I've used DVDDecrypter for a long while to create an ISO image. With new protections this is no longer suitable as it fails regularly on various DVDs with failing to read sectors. Today I did a bit of research and went with AnyDVD trial and ImgBurn (which I'd used previously to write the copies). AnyDVD seems to work well, but the conversion rate places it around $65AUD (even with their current 20% discount) which I feel is a little more than I want to pay given all I use it for. Are there any other realistic alternatives for a simple read and create ISO image with no hassle?

I use AnyDVD as it does a number of useful things.
Allows you to back up the DVD
Removes region coding
Allows you to slow the spin speed of the disc (quieter) for DVD/Audio CDs while still allowing maximum spin rate for data.
Since I use my MC to play DVDs as well, I think it was a worthwhile investment, particularly as upgrades are free for life.
As stated, for ripping DVD's I use DVD Shrink because it allows me to be selective about the content I extract and thereby reducing the necessary storage on my NAS device. On the other hand, I use AnyDVD HD on my VMC in order to deal with region coding and to avoid those forced features of most DVD's that make you sit through warnings and intros etc. rather than going straight to the title menu.

Still, it depends if yuou need these features.
Second vote for AnyDVD
And It will remove HDCP and allow to use non-HDCP video cards or cable connectivity for Blu-Ray
And some BD's has protection to not allow to play in computer. AnyDVD will remove it.
