Australian Senator, Stephen Conroy, is set to introduce mandatory Internet filtering in 2008. This petition has been organised to put an end to the filtering in Australia, before it begins!
Existing reports (some even conducted by the Australian Government) show that ISPs and customers will be forced to pay if mandatory filtering is introduced.
Signed! As much as I love our country I have really started to grow tired of it over the last few years....this is just another thing to add to the list of reasons.
The thing is, it is really a difficult thing to argue against.
If you say you're against ISP level filtering of pornograpgy, or any other material, the moral majority will counter with the old chestnut, "it's to stop child pornography, don't you want to stop child pornography?"
The answer to that is yes, I do want to stop it. If I though ISP based filtering was the way to go about it and was 100% fool proof then I would say yes.
The fact is this won't stop those types of people, it will only cause problems for legitimate users of any internet material, even using google would be slowed as each search will need to go through the ISPs filter.
I think the previous Government had the right idea when it comes to protecting children, they provided a filter that parents could install and manage for themselves.
It comes down to personal choice, and parents should monitor computer usage in their homes there should be no need for the Government to regulate what people can or can't do or see. If they commit an offence prosecute, but this won't stop people intent on committing an offence but will stop innocent people accessing legal content.
completely agree dgaust, whenever anyone tries to stop anything it only ever hurts the innocents. Try and block piracy, pirates will always find a way to get around it, but the people who are wanting to back up a dvd they own on to their hard drive are the ones who are left dumbfounded. Same will be for this nonsense of trying to control the internet, people who want the stuff will always get around it, but the people wanting to do the "right" thing will suffer in the end.

That's it in a nutshell - nothing more to be said really unless someone likes the idea of living in 1984
