Crunchie Conversion lacks video (codec prob)

I have looked around the board for an answer to this and not managed to find one so please excuse me if I just overlooked something. I happily installed Crunchie (followed the instructs to the letter) and tried a few videos to convert. Out the blocks I could only get audio playback and not video - I tried the ffdshow suggested and after installation I could play none of the files. They loaded in WMP and said they were playing but no sound, video or movement in the time slider. Uninstalled that codec, tried the "microsoft" suggested Divx - then klite - AVI codec pack - and various others. Tried using Gspot to diagnose but when no codecs are installed it says I need them (obvious) and when ANY of the codecs or packs are installed it says DirectShow Render can play the files just fine - I'm at my wits end and my wife is starting to lose patience with my computer setup and late nights. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Running a fairly stock HP box with AMD Athlon 3400+ and 1.5G of RAM and MCE 2005 rollup 2. If I'm leaving out important info to diagnose just let me know. Thanks in advance.

Re: Crunchie Conversion lacks video (codec prob)

Hi,

I'm not sure what I else I can suggest to do. Crunchie creates compliant mpeg4 (xvid) format avi's. They play back without issue with any version of ffdshow I've used.

It sounds to me that your machine may be seriously screwed up. Installing klite can be a sure fire way of breaking an MCE install too.

I'd suggest that you re-build the system, it's the only guaranteed way of fixing problems.

The only other possibility would be to re-install directx as it appears this is where the fault lies.

Cheers,

Arkay.

Re: Crunchie Conversion lacks video (codec prob)

Thanks for your quick reply. Your right about klite (and most codec packs for that matter) It was my last resort and I do regret installing it. I followed your advice and went on a mission to remove all "extra" codecs and start from scratch (wasn't bold enough to reload the whole system yet). I stumbled on a brilliant program at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DXMan.htm called DXMan that let me see a list of all installed Audio and Video codecs and the file names with a nice big Remove button. After just a bit of investigation to find the "non-standard" ones I removed directvobsub and all is well. Lesson learned and a note to any other users - whatever pack or codecs you choose stay away from directvobsub - nothing but trouble.

Excellent. Glad you got it sorted. Will have a look at that tool too. Bout time someone made directx a little more user friendly... Pity Microsoft haven't realised that too.....

Cheers,

Arkay.
