Crunched files, audio sync problems, and Archos

First off GREAT work with Crunchie! I am able to record and Crunch programs but when I play the AVI files on my Archos AV500 the audio seems to get slightly out of sync with the video then every 5 or 10 seconds the video seems to skip ahead to catch up. The audio and video look synced for a couple few seconds then start to get increasingly out of sync until the video skips ahead again.

This does NOT seem to be the case when playing the AVI file back on the computer. It is also not a problem when the Archos AV500 is used itself as the recording device (using it's built-in recording program - an alternative to MCE+Crunchie).

I have tried using a 600 bitrate in Crunchie thinking that the Archos is having trouble playing the file (my thinking was that to reduce the bitrate would result in the Archos using less processing power to play). If this is the right track I'd also like to reduce the quality of the audio slightly but can't figure out how to do that. This entire track could be wrong though... what do I know!

Any ideas?

Anthony

Re: Crunched files, audio sync problems, and Archos

The output file that crunchie creates should be no more taxing on the system than an avi downloaded off the net.

The only thing that will up the CPU power requred for playback is the "Double Rate Deinterlace". Don't use that and you should be fine.

All audio in Crunchie (at this point in time), is converted to 128kbs mp3.

That should be fine for a standalone player..

The output resolution might be a factor. If you are not using double rate deinterlace you can try changing the output resolution to something lower.

In the install folder of crunchie you will find a .ini file. There are two values in there that control output resolution. They are:

AR169
AR43

These contain the values used for 16:9 and 4:3 material respectively. You can change the values to anything you like but make sure they are multples of 16.

i.e. Currently the AR169 value is probably 640x368 you could for instance change that to 592x320 or 320x184 (probably look terrible) but you get the drift.

A bitrate up to about 1500 should also be fine.

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: Crunched files, audio sync problems, and Archos

No worries.

Just tried to find some further info on the archos. Looks like most support up to dvd resolutions (720x576) at 25fps with mp3 audio so the resolution shouldn't be a problem. Because it is a portable it might have bitrate limitations though I couldn't find anything about that.

Stick with the 600bps just to see.

Out of curiosity were you using the double rate deinterlacing?

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: Crunched files, audio sync problems, and Archos

Looks like that did the trick. I kept it at 600 but removed double rate deinterlacing (which I DID previously have on). The sync issue is completely resolved. Thanks so much for the help.
