What have I done wrong?

As I have RU2 I can't use DVRMSToolbox, so I tried Videoredo to edit a DVR-MS file. I worked well and gave me an MPEG that would play in WMP. I then used Crunchie to convert the file to avi. This file looked OK when played in WMP on my workhorse PC. All good.

I copied to avi to my MCE box to play it and got an unknown error message. The Finished screnn flashed up three times before the unknown error message and the avi did not play.

ffdshow is installed on the MCE box (I just took the defaults when installing).

So, where did I go wrong?

Re: What have I done wrong?

Glen,

That's odd. Try playing it in Windows Media Player on your MCE box.

All it should need is ffdshow installed.

If it plays on one machine it should play on all. You could try a different version of ffdshow maybe?

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: What have I done wrong?

Some quick testing.

I RDC'd in using the admin account I have for this and ran the avi with WMP on the remote desktop. It played OK except for the low bit colour (as you would expect).

Retried using MCE and the same problem, so I exited MCE and tried to run it with WMP using the MCE account. Played the audio OK, but only put up the musical note icon instaed of the video.

Account problem?????

Anyway, no time to do more, back to work today.

Re: What have I done wrong?

Who knows... It's windoze...

I'd log in as your normal MCE user and uninstall ffdshow then re-install it, take the defaults for the installation except for the audio art of it. Uncheck all audio options! and see how you go.

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: What have I done wrong?

Interestingly, it plays on my other PC in WMP10 without ffdshow installed.

Re: What have I done wrong?

Yes but there will be some other codec installed that decodes divx. Either divx 6 or koepi's xvid codec... It has to be there somewhere.

Just with MCE the best decoder is ffdshow as it allows so much extra functionality.

Cheers,
Arkay.

Re: What have I done wrong?

Hey Guys,

Do you/or have you guys used a small APP called Direct Show Filter Manager to list all the codecs on your system. Very handy for resetting priorities (merit) for codecs or removing them. Doesn't help with what actually missing though - use other apps for that.

I was having probs with MPEG files getting a a codec error in WMP10 and then not playing at all in MCE. After finding & installing a suitable MPEG2 codec to play the files it took over my Nvidia Purevideo audio settings for LiveTV. With DSFM I was able to remerit the new codec to below the Nvidia no probs.

May be useful to see what you've got on both machines.??

Later,

Nudge

Re: What have I done wrong?

Success!!! I uninstalled ffdshow and reinstalled it under the MCE users account as you said arkay, this time ticking the all users box , and it worked.

Only problem now is I think I stuffed around so much I've got other gremlins in the system. Time to reload the image. Thank goodness for DiveImageXML...
