Hi stone pointer,

Only codec you should need for the majority of avi playback formats is ffdshow.

Cheers,
Arkay.

i just tryed the codecs arkay posted for me and am still getting WMP saying it cant play because WMP might not support the file type or that it might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. hopefully i will be able to watch all new recordings tho? i will find out and let all know tomorrow

ffdshow includes decoders for these formats. Which is a good thing as the latest divx decoders come packages with some lovely adware.

For some reason on my system, I have to use the alpha version of ffdshow, as the normal version gives me extremely choppy unwatchable playback for xvid encoded movies.

Yes, the xvid codec would've been downloaded and installed when Crunchie was installed.

It is only required for encoding though. All my decoding is done by ffdshow and yes, sometimes it is necessary to try a few different versions of ffdshow to find one that works for you. God help us if anyone ever manages to write software for Windows that actually runs the same way on any Windows machine!!!

Cheers,
Arkay.

Have you tried other avi files? ie not created by crunchie? do they run with media player, have you loaded any other editing software after the codecs were originally installed? you may need to uninstall/reinstall the codecs again
One thought what version of media player? if its a bit old might be an idea to upgrade it

Obviously for backing up your own movies?
DVD Shrink looks after the copyright/macrovision removal by itself, you can tell it to back up to a hdd folder then burn the contents later.

To play them back from the hdd is not that simple, but you should be able to play the vob files with say PowerDVD, remember though you will need a DVD decoder installed (not standard in MCE) I use the Nvidia DVD decoder

If you have the decoder installed please ignore the above

Hope some of this helps

I havent used the latest version of dvdshrink but assume it hasnt changed much
