ok my holiday project has arrived - well at least most of the bits.. inc 2 x Adaptec 31205, 20 x WD 1TB, a nice Lian-Li case, Asus WS mobo and some other bits, going for ubuntu distro (I know way off topic here..) - so build time, watch this space...
I think I'm going to be sick with jealousy. What case do you fit 20 x 1TB HDD into?? I got 18 into my Lian Li, and felt rather successful, but now feeling insecure at my position in the multiHDD ranks...
Nice work though , keep us informed.
What power supply, how are you config'ing the HDD's, and don't forget to buy a UPS, it's very very worth it.
BTW, I lost a HDD today, got home to a dead primary master which had rebooted the fileserver and was also causing the slave drive to not be detected (master and slave were in a RAID 1, 16 others in 2 x 8 drive RAID 5's). Replaced the master drive, reboot, and once into the O/S, rebuild to the new HDD. Gotta love redundancy!!!
BTW, I think the Seagate Barracuda 8 and 9 series were crap. LOTS of failed drives. Don't trust them. The newer 10 seres are better... Samsung's are good, and good luck on the WD drives....
Wow, peedon, that's some serious money there... 8-10K ish??
Cheers

hi TiggerK,
so far all I've done is install 1 drive, just wanted to test mobo, cpu, ram, video, etc, etc install, and did this with Windows Vista - which I am not going to stick with (well I might if I get stuck with ubuntu) - not using the Adaptec's at present, just sata off the mobo - the case is this one: http://www.lian-li.com/product/produ...index=6&type=b
it has this capacity:
Device 7x5.25", 12x3.5" internal(removable HDD brackets), 1 x 5.25" to 3.5" converter with a FDD bezel , 1x CD-ROM bezel
so 12 HDD's go straight in, then (I think) there's 3 x 5.25 to 3.5 converters which make 3 of the 5.25 slots into 3 x 3.5" slots (each) - so another 9 - but this bit is theory as I don't have those bits yet, so it may be less, perhaps the same as your 18 drive set up.
Power supply is Antec 1000W, nice beast as it has lots of attachable power leads, but this could be a problem as it may not have enough total for the 20 HDD's (sata & converted moelx, haven't counted yet).. although the spec says 8 x sata and 9 x molex
am planning 2 x 8 RAID 6 (so 2 redundant drives per, leaving 6TB useable x 2 = 12TB), + another 4 RAID 5 - not 100% sure yet..
Why ubuntu? I know it seems like the popular choice but it's not really designed as a server OS?
If you get time and before you commit to it have a look at OpenSuse. I use lvm under OpenSuse and it's rock solid. Ubuntu doesn't even come with lvm installed out of the box.
same case as me!!.... you can get 19 HDD's in, I went for 18 and a floppy (for those RAID drivers!!) It's a great case. I also added a lot of extra fans in all sorts of places to make sure there was airflow happening front to back over all the drives all the time. I don;t think the standard ones are quite enough for a full case.
If you looking at RAID 6, perhaps go for as many drives as you can manage on that card (I assume the Adaptec does 12 drives in a RAID 6??). If so that would be very nice. Using another RAID setup will only waste drives!! And RAID 6 seems like the go, My RAID 5 setup is fine, but these stupid seagate drives do go far too often, and I still get nervous!! Must do a backup backup onto DVD methinks.
Cheers

Just some thoughts.

Cheers Arkay,
I'll give OpenSuse a go.. I had looked elsewhere and that was the recommendation, but maybe I didn't detail my requirements that well, which are basically just a big server for file serving and not much else.. Might look at doing multiple boot options, although maybe I'll build a small box for mucking around on, might be best...
Assuming you are going with SATA drives, this allows you to install 5HDD in the space of 3 5.25" bays. Got me a couple of these and was able to easily get 10 drives in right off the bat in my case. Also allows for easy HDD swaps in case of failure and with the right raid card, supports hot-swap. Definitely worth it if you are trying to squeeze in as many drives as humanly possible.
