External Hard Disk Enclosures

Im looking to turn my shuttle sff pc into a NAS.

The shuttle currently has 2 hdd and a dvd drive. It is getting quite hot inside the case.

Im am looking to move atleast the second drive outside the box to an external usb enclosure in a hope to cool things down.

I am also then looking to add additional drives via external usb enclosures.

I was wondering what good enclosures there are.

Possibly ones that hold multiple drives.

Ones that stack well.

Ones that will managed power well. (I dont want several external power supplies if possible)

Re: External Hard Disk Enclosures

Well i have a maxtor external case, i bought it a few years but keep changing the disk in it, and it is a very good unit.

1) How many sata ports does your motherboard have, you may want to consider e-sata as opposed to USB

2) I have never seen enclosures that stack or hold more than one drive, unless you go to a NAS server, but these are expensive.

3) Most enclosures i have seen do not have built in fans, and their enclosures are all plastic, so they give no heat off and they can get very got to touch, which is not a good idea for a hard drive that is presumably going to run very often, so external are going to have worse heat issues than you internal ones.

4) I know this is probably going to sound un-fun, but if you are going to buy external drives, the enclosures themselves are going to cost around $50 or add $50 to the cost of a unit that has a hard drive in it.

It may be cheaper just to go and buy a basic ATX case, that will give you internal slots for your HD so you can run them at full speed, and without all the messy power plug-paks that are required to run external 3.5" hard drives. You could pick up a good case for under $100 that most likley will have a 120mm fan at the front to cool your hard drives.

It depends on what you want, and how much you want to spend. For 1-2 drives, external may be just an easy add on. Considering that your existing case gets too hot with the existing setup, it might be a good idea just to get a nice cheapo case with heaps of HD slots.

Hope this helps.

PS. I have an antec 900, which you can pick up for $175, as a server it has 6 HD slots that are in removable HD cages that are cooled by 2x 120mm fans, so it would work great. You would not have the messy plug-packs, and all hard drives would be kept cool, not to mention it looks awsome.

Re: External Hard Disk Enclosures

For multiple HDD enclosures with internal cooling and access via different interfaces (Network/USb2.0/eSATA) they can get expensive (200+ without the drives) but look at the "Tera-box" or "Tera-box Lite" most of which can hold up to 4 drives (SATA or IDE depends on model) so you can have a network storage capacity up to 2 Tera Bytes depending on you needs. Otherwise The Nex Star Enclosures are good value but each one will need its own power supply.
Cheers

I don't think you can get these in Australai yet - but the Drobo looks fantastic - although it is a bit expensive.

It takes up to 4 sata drives (in any size combination) and protects your data (as long as you have at least two drives in there).

Re: External Hard Disk Enclosures

I have a few external USB cases, one is a stand alone media player which is excellent for going away i can load it up with shows pop it in a bag and play it on a tv like a dvd player it also has built in card reader for looking at holiday snaps while away. other two are just cases
all 3 have fans inside aswell as the top and bottom of the normal ones are heatsinks.. they pump out alot of heat but drives have lived in them for a couple of years now

Only let down with these puppies is i have noticed media centre on another computer does not go will with these.. when connected to my computer they work well in media centre, but when trying to play over the network to the other media centre pc in the other house it has quite abit of lag, around 30seconds or so to start loading up folders.

you have alot of options you could use but for one drive its worth getting the hdd case
