Home Media Gateway

I am currently looking at the following:

http://www.lsi.com/documentation/net...gateway_sb.pdf

From a company called Agere that was recently acquired by LSI. (You probably know them as manufacturers of RAID and HBA cards). Its one of the few 'Home/Small Business' targetted NAS devices that have support for more than 2 or 3 HDD's (8 to be specific).

To top it all off, it includes an inbuilt switch tailored with Level 3/4 switching optimised for video streaming, built in QOS for the 2 included VOIP ATA's and a GigaBit connection for my MCE machine to store my DVD collection on. At the bargain prices you can get 750GB HDD's for at the moment I can fully populate the unit for 5.5TB of storage, just about enough for my 600 odd DVD's. This includes the parity drive for RAID 5, since I will only transfer the DVD's ONCE!

Re: Home Media Gateway

Why are they still putting any 10/100 ports in these things? Sure, that's fine for streaming, but for moving large video files, it's a PITA. How long has gigabit copper been around for? Surely there isn't the price differential between 100 megabit & gigabit components to justify using 100 megabit in a high end device like this?

Apart from that, there's plenty to play with. Makes WHS look a bit thin. How much?

Re: Home Media Gateway

Since the device supports 2xGBit as well as 10/100 I'm afraid I don't understand your rant.

Re: Home Media Gateway

I agree with logifuse, all motherboards have a Gigabit Nic's but manufacturers still put 10/100 into lots of new routers. 802.11n and 10/100 .
100MB is slow. So USB2.

I believe the 10/100 ports are designed for the streaming of video data to your IPTV devices (ie/ Xbox360 Extender) since they don't need much more. Also they are configured as quite a complex switch with functions available only in some higher level Cisco switches. If you look at how much gigabit switches are these days, it makes sense to save money in that area. (you still have gigabit connectivity for your transfers though)

As for the price, I've chased up 2 local resellers, couple from China and am now resorting to going direct, as all the ones I've checked only deal in some of LSI's range (ie/ Raid IC's, and HBA's)
