Smile Pls Check new cheap build

Hey guys,

It has been ages since I posted last.. This is a good thing beacuse it means that my Media Server and Media Centre are both behaving as they should. Becuase I have not looked for a while, I was hoping you could cast your eyes over this proposed spec to make sure everything is copacetic .

This box is a mega mega cheap option. This is for our gym - it will be used to play movies and music only streamed from the server. No recording or anything tricky like that

Spec
MOBO : ASUS M2N8-VMX $82
CPU : Sempron 3000+ $41
RAM : Samsung 512 DDR2 667 $39
Video Card : ASUS EN7300LE/TD/128M $62
HDD : Samsung SATA 16M 400Gig $139

I already have a case and PSU that I can use for this and will be running XP MCE as the OS

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Re: Pls Check new cheap build

There are two things you can do that cost bugger all but will give you a hell of a lot of return:

1. Increase the ram to 2Gb, Going from 512Mb to 1Gb offers a dramatic performance increase (and stability), Going from 1Gb to 2Gb gives much less but still provides an increase, but the BEST part is than 2 x 1Gb sticks will cost only $80 more that the $40 you assigned.

2. The onboard audio is going to eat CPU cycles, the Sempy already being a cheapo cut down CPU will suffer a bit, why not throw in something like a 2nd hand Audigy 1 and free up CPU cycles for more demanding tasks. A 2nd hand Audigy 1 will set you back about $40. Hell I've got one lying around you could have for that, yeah I'm in Sydney too, out west in Kellyville.
