Build new HTPC or chuck current rig in HTPC box

Hi

I've recently got a 32" Samsung LCD. I have a 3.2 P4 socket 478, Asus P4P800E deluxe mobo, 1 gig of ram and a 6600 vid card. I'm wanting to build a HTPC on a limited budget, would I be better off getting a new case and putting my current desktop rig in that with quieter fans etc or just starting from scratch and building a new HTPC. The only thing is I really only have enough cash to do a Celeron D 351 CPU. They are a 3.2gig but I'm worried that it won't have enough grunt to run a HTPC. I'm now just thinking of building a budget desktop as I don't play games and just transferring the current desktop rig across.

What does everyone think of this?

Thanks
Matt

Use your existing box, you already know its ins and outs and what you need to get it working. If you really need a second rig. use the new cheapie as a desktop machine.

Re: Build new HTPC or chuck current rig in HTPC box

my only concern is that your original system is prolly going to put out a lot of heat, if its a Prescott core...do you know if its prescott or northwood???

Re: Build new HTPC or chuck current rig in HTPC box

that would be the only thing i have a problem with...

HTPCs are generally supposed to be silent, as to not interferr with the viewing experiance...the more heat, the more cooling required, generally more cooling means more fans or faster fans...more/faster fans = more noise...

i know for a fact, the skt 478 prescotts were not CPU's, they were heating suppliments

Someone else was complaining about a Celeron D after upgrading - might be worth doing a seach on the site about them.

I run a 478 2.8GHz. You would need something like a Zalman 7000B-cu cooler to get the 3.2 to run quiet & cool.

Why not build the current system in to a new case & make sure anything you buy can be used if you upgrade?

Use your existing system. Something like a Zalman 7700 CPU cooler will definitely help. Although it won't run as cool as an AMD system it will be adequate. Your 3.2Ghz CPU is definitely enough to run Dual Digital tuners.

Re: Build new HTPC or chuck current rig in HTPC box

Well I hooked my computer up to the TV yersterday arvo and was pretty dissapointed. I think I need to invest in an aerial as the sound was very ordinary, was dropping in and out all the time and I didn't even pick up channel 9. The LG set top box I have doesn't have any issues like this. TV card is a Leadtek DTV1000T, was running the Leadtek codec and spidf to my amp.

By the way, with these tv cards I found that Bold and the Beautiful ( wasn't watching it ) was displaying in 4:3 through pc then when I reconnected set top box was in 16:9. Any ideas on why this would occur. I'm not giving up after one crack at it, I'm just gunna have to keep doing research and read these forums alot.

Re: Build new HTPC or chuck current rig in HTPC box

MCE is pretty picky when it comes to signal strengths...

Have you run the SETUP YOUR DISPLAY wizard in MCE??? you need to choose between a 4:3 or 16:9 display, etc, etc...
