Question Firewire - do you use it?

Bit of market research...

I've built a number of systems with relatively high spec motherboards - all including firewire (1394) ports.

My question: While nice to have - is anyone actually using them? I've only used mine a couple of times for my Sony DV cam - but decided to use my other PC's for video editing due to the better keyboard/mouse/sound control on a desktop interface. For my large portable HDD's is use USB 2 - plenty of speed.

So here is the question:

1394/Firewire port - actually useful for the normal MCE user - or overspecced?

Do you actually use it? What for?
Appreciate your input. Thx, Variateur

Re: Firewire - do you use it?

Like you, I have a separate machine for all DV/Photo editing.

For me, firewire on the HTPC is surplus.

Off topic, but your avatar makes it difficult to read these forums @ work
(Sambooka's is a little more subtle!)

Sorry, didn't mean for you to change it! Doesn't break any laws that I'm aware of.

Re: Firewire - do you use it?

I have two FireWire hard drives and I connect my iPod using FireWire.

It's a deal breaker for me, I will not buy a new computer or motherboard if it lacks onboard FireWire.

Not fair! I miised the original. Now I'll never know. (Just have to make do with Sambooka's)

On Topic - surplus to my MCE box. I use another PC for DV uploads etc.

Not sure what the question is here. As you've stated most higher spec mobo's have one or more of them. It's not like it will cost you $100's more to have firewire.

If you dont need it, disable it in the bios and dont connect headers. Simple.

Common uses are for HDD's and DV equipment thats about it.

The question was Market Research for the MCE's I sell.

Would the average user (or you) pay $ 50-80 more for a firewire / 1394 capable MCE, or rather save the money?

Thx, Variateur

Re: Firewire - do you use it?

When I bought mine, Firewire was a must.

I don't edit DV, but I store it and write it to DVD using my MCE machine.

1) Can't be bothered with having it on a second computer.
2) I don't have a seocnd computer to put it on.
