1tb harddrives

just read a post from the "Introduce Yourself" section of this forum

and ddh wanted to know more about this size of drives and suggested there had been mexed reviews so i thought i'd create this thread to focus a little bit more on these drives

so just for a little bit of an introduction ill talk a little bit what out there at the moment

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1tb drive
a late commer to the 1tb market this drive provides 1 tb streched across 4 platters which means 250gb on each platter. 32mb buffer transfers at about 300mbps and spin at 7200rpm seagate also provides a 5 year warrenty

Samsung SpinPoint F1 1tb drive
one of the latest drives out on the market. this is a 3 platter drive squeezing 334GB onto a single platter after that its all pritty average from here 32mb buffer, write at about 300mbps and spins alo at 7200rpm how ever the samsung anly ships with a 3 year warrenty

WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR GP - 1000GB/7200RPMHard Disk Drive
this was the second 1tb drive on the market behind the hatachi this is the 1st 4 platter drvice in the 1tb size it only has 16 mb buffer will write at 3mbps and also spins at 7200rpm also ships with a 3 year warrenty

*have also hear rumous floting around the WD has/is relising a new 1b drive called black bosting 3 platters 32mb buffer and a 5 year warrenty but i havent been able to confurm this

Hitachi's Deskstar 7K1000 1tb drive
this is the first and i remember drooling over this last year going i must have one. this is a 5 platter drive streaching 200gb accross these platters 32mg buffer 7200rpm and a 3 year warrenty

and i'm sure there are others if there are please post the drive and its specs

now i've used a few of these drives at one point or another over the past year.
from experience i found the hitachi really noisy and it runs hot but it is still working hard on my file server.

i baught 2 seagates for my htpc and all was good till the other week when one decided to pack it in first segate to do that in about 4 years but there was hardly any data on it and it is still under warrenty so seagate happly replaced it with a new one.
generly i have found the segates reliable though they do produce a little bit of heat but no where near as much as the hatchi

i never buy wd drives had way to many issues with them over the years so i really try to avoid them

however i did buy a samsung just recently now not knowing a lot about these drives i though for $180 i'll give it a go and see what happens. but now i'm rather happy with it. surprisingly its quite compaired to the others and after lanning for an entire night i went to take it out and put in in another pc so we dont bomb the network by leaching 100's gbs while other pleople are playing games but anyway i pulled the drive out and expected it to be unbairable hot but i could carry it around in my bair hands.
so it seem like a good drive but only time will tell.

Re: 1tb harddrives

WD do have the "black edition" of the 1TB. PLE in Perth stock them, but they are much more expensive then all the others (over $200 last time i checked!). The Green series are power saving, Blue is mainstream and Black is performance. So you would expect the Black to perform much better, haven't seen a review on it.

I am not sure of the model number, but there seems to be 2 Samsung 1TB drives. There is a cheaper one (i think MCG Tech in Perth have them) but it only spins at 5400RPM, then the better one which i think was the one you were talking about.

The Samsungs generally have the reputation of being Cooler/Quieter then the other drives...there is a slight performance penalty from it, but i doubt its noticeable unless benchmarking read/write speeds.

Re: 1tb harddrives

I currently have One of the Seagate 1TB 7200rpm 32mb drives (cant recall model without opening my box) and also 2x WD 1TB Greenpower drives 16mb.

I have a personal preference for the Seagate drives, but really the performance between these two I wouldnt be able to split without running a benchmarking program.

Sorry to hear about the failure you had with your Seagate drive. From my time as a tech I found that sometimes they come thru as duds, but if it lasts out the first few weeks then you should be good for a while.

Touch wood .. I have never had a Seagate crash nor WD for that matter. My older Maxtors I have had issues with which used to be a boot drive for me, now it is temp storage till they die.

What are peoples views on Hitatchi or Samsung drives? I have never really used. I sorta get the impression that these are cheaper drives, lower specs, but from what I see across the board there doesnt seem to be much difference.

i to prefer seagate and i have owned 20+ seagate drives over the years as well reccomenting luckly i didn't have much on it and the few things that were were backed up on my main pc so no data loss .However since the drive was still in warrenty i was able to get a replacement

maybe i shoud stick all 3 drives in a raid array for all my media

but the sumsung i've had for about 2 months now and i can confurm it is 7200rpm surprised really cause i would consider it a cheepie drive but since i had never used em before i thought i'd give it a go and i'm pleesed so far

Re: 1tb harddrives

I have the WD 1TB geen power as movie storage and have had no problems with it. It's a great quiet drive.

Re: 1tb harddrives

I am using WD green power and Samsung Eco Green. I did some performance tests (written up in another thread) on the Ecogreen and it handles everything I have thrown at it. including simultaneous recording a high rate file transfers.

I would strongly recommend the Samsung Ecogreen as a cool quiet and hopefully reliable due to 5400 rpm. I probably shouldn't say this, but of the 15 HDDs in my home I haven't had problems since I upgraded all my PSUs (Corsair HX520/620) and installed a UPS for my WHS and HTPC.

Re: 1tb harddrives

I'll also back the 1Tb samsung eco green. Speedy cool and silent. Did a fair bit of reading before selecting it and now that I have it running I am very pleased with it.

Re: 1tb harddrives

I have found what I think to be a decent price for the Samsung 1TB Eco drive but also found a 7200rpm model also see links below

So my next question is what external enclosure would people recommend?
I have both USB and firewire connectivity available and wouldn't mind an enclosure with both options but as I doubt I would see much difference I am happy to go with the concensus.

Samsung EcoGreen F1 DT 1TB - 32MB 1,000GB SATA II 5,400rpm $160 incl GST

SAMSUNG 1TB HD103UJ HDD - 32MB Cache - 1,000GB SATA II 7200rpm $169 incl GST
