Big Screen Weather not refreshing automatically

Gday,
I've installed BSW which by far and away is the best weather plugin for aus i've seen. I have my refresh intervals set to 10 minutes, but the app is not refreshing automatically, to retreive the latest data, i need to do a manual refresh.

Any ideas?

Doesn't work for me either... i'm guessing this bug won't be fixed until the trial-ware version of BSW comes out.

Re: Big Screen Weather not refreshing automatically

Hi.

Just to clarify - there wasn't ever an intention to do 'automatic' updating of data while the user is sittting on the main screen - so to use that MS cliche - this was 'by design'. All downloads/refreshes are always 'user initiated' - either by going into a category or by clicking one of the 'refresh data'buttons in the UI.

The reason for this is that if someone forgot to close down the addin (ie it was in background nav stack on the main menu, or they just powered down the tv but not the machine) - auto refreshing would cause a lot of unnecessary bandwidth (and I could get some very unhappy users if they were on low plans/paying excess mb charges.).

Anyhow - look out for v2 of this product. The updating of data is done completely differently and substantially reduces the bandwidth required (and I have control over bad data sources - rather than the app breaking like on the radar screen on v1).

cheers
Niall

ps - as mentioned in other thread/site... v1 is now 'discontinued' to make way for v2. You're most likely going to find that ever so slowly - things start to break on v1 (as 3rd party changes to weather feeds that you directly access - will eventually change).

Ahhhh.... I guess the refresh interval settings are for something else then?

yes... thats correct..

the concept of the refresh interval is that it tells BSW 'how' to make it's decision on whether the data needs to be updated (when you go into each subsection like observations/forecasts). Ie. if your setting is 30 mins refresh - and you navigate into observations section from main menu - behind the scenes it says 'is the current data more than 30 mins old - if so - go download it again - otherwise go straight into the observations section'.

If i didn't have these settings - then you'd be copping a refresh each and every time you went into any submenu.

The 'refresh' buttons on the UI are then provided to do a forced refresh (ignoring update settings).

Anyhow hope that clarifies it..

Keep in mind that weather stations aren't always updated regularly (many stations in australia only get updated every 1-2 hours - altough a small handful get updates every few minutes) - so it's not such an issue as you might think. This is particularly the case in v2 for global stations.

Niall
