I would like to conceal my Yamaha RX-V995 AV receiver in the cabinet below the TV. The receiver has a couple of jacks for plugging IR receiver buds. Does anyone know if I can plug in the IR buds that come with the Media Centre remote and operate the receiver?

No, they're emitters, not receivers.
If you're handy with electronics, Jaycar have a kit that can extend IR signals (or they have an off the shelf unit for about $40).

So, what are the 2x Media Centre emitter buds used for then?
They're for controlling pay TV set top boxes when they are connected to a Media Center - it's so that when you change channel in MC, the STB changes channel too.

I might be wrong (I get easily confused), but I think that the MS IR blasters that come with the remote might do the job for scottishgu, but not in the way he was planning.
From my understanding, if he plugs the IR blasters into the MS receiver, then sticks one of them onto the IR receiver on his amp, he should be able to control the amp when it is hidden away. The MS receiver will be acting as recevier for the amp, and sending signal to it via the blaster.

The MS receiver doesn't pass commands from other remotes through it - it only accepts commands from its own remote/keyboard (or from remotes that clone their functions such as the Logitech Harmony remotes).

You can use HIP to replace the standard MCE IR handling and foward IR commands to the AV amplifier (via the IR emmitters (buds)). In order to do this, you will need to overwrite some of the "button" functions on the MCE remote so that they control the amp instead of MCE eg. change the volume control buttons to change the volume on the amp instead of MCE. For more details on HIP, see http://www.byremote.com.au/downloads...asp?SCLASS=HIP and http://forums.dvbowners.com/index.php?showforum=44.
I think you're all mixing up what can & can't be done.
Yes you can use a Harmony remote to run MCE/VMC.
Yes a Harmony remote can also run a surround amp.
NO, a Harmony remote won't enable you to pass a fulll range of commands for the amp through the MS receiver & out through the buds to the amp.
Yes, you can use HIP to map some basic functions of the receiver, but it will not achieve what scottishgu wants to do to an acceptable level.
Sorry to be a downer, but it's a non-starter - you're better off looking for an alternative way to do it rather than trying to fit this square peg in that round hole.
