Logitech Harmony 525 Programmable Remote Control

harmony-intro.jpgIt’s been a few weeks since I’ve had the chance to post a review, but the Christmas / New Year break has given me the opportunity to live with the latest toy auspcmarket sent for review – the Logitech Harmony 525 remote control. I looked forward to reviewing this as Logitech’s Harmony range has a good reputation amongst Media Centre enthusiasts, yet until now I never had the opportunity to try one. So, when the review model arrived, I was keen to put it through its paces.

The 525 sits at the lower end...

Good review, Glen.

I had very similar experiences with it. It is hard to beat MS Remote, especially if it is made by Philips.

Re: Logitech Harmony 525 Programmable Remote Control

Nice review Glen. Just a word to the wise though... I would definitely suggest going for one of the higher end models as personally I think their ergonomics and feel are probably much better. (I'm guessing here because I've never felt in any way dissappointed with such things on the 880 or the 785 which I bought for my GF.) As it happens I also tried out the 1000i and while I know some will disagree with me here, I found that while it seemed a great idea its ergonomics made it very difficult to use if you're used to doing things one handed.

As far as the programming side of things goes I tend to agree that it can be a bit fiddly to set up and I think that the problem actually lies in the accuracy of Logitech's device database. The main problem from what I've seen is that in some cases the device's behaviour just isn't accurately reflected by the database either because of inaccurate timings or codes or because of collisions between devices. For instance, I have found that startup and interkey delays can be quite incorrect and need to be manually adjusted to accurately reflect the performance of the unit. In other cases I have found that input change methodology in the database may suggest that there is a single code for a given
input but the programmed code simply doesn't work and there is no way to learn the code because in fact you have to cycle through the codes or bring up a menu to select the one you want. There are certainly ways to work around these things but it can definitely get frustrating.

In the end, despite the fiddly nature of getting set up I cannot recommend the higher end Harmony remotes (with the exception of the 1000i) enough. Once they are set up you will quickly find that you could not possibly consider going back to multiple remotes and that most high end programmable remotes are even more expensive and possibly even more difficult to set up.

I use to have this remote and loved it, however I upgraded to 880.

Re: Logitech Harmony 525 Programmable Remote Control

not my experience. Yes, can be a pain setting up but that is mainly due to the diversity on IR controls of the devices to be controlled. Ergonomics are quite good - once you get used to button placement and tactile feedback. Untimate test is WAF - and that has rated high..

Compared to using 5 remotes to control my setup there is no way of going back. Not sure about going for the higher end models - my WMC made watching media simpler and with less devices so I don't know why I would need more buttons (or a colour screen as I hardly ever look at that screen.)

Re: Logitech Harmony 525 Programmable Remote Control

I have had one of these for over a year. I agree with the comments on programming and tactile feel of buttons. Battery life is also very poor.

However, this remote is a keeper because once setup it just works, with very high WAF and KAF. It's also the only remote that the family haven't managed to destroy.
