Windows Home Server – Part 2

whs_intro_2.jpgIn the first part of this review of auspcmarket’s Windows Home Server system I looked at the WHS operating system and was impressed with what I found. In this part I’ll take a look at the hardware they have chosen to deliver it on and see if it measures up. The Coolermaster iTower930 midi-tower has been selected as the case and is an excellent choice. It features four quick-release / install SATA HDD cradles on the front,
allowing drives to be added or changed without the need to open the case. Because WHS is so sc...

Re: Windows Home Server – Part 2

4 drives is that it?
Server? how so?
To serve what? At home. Backups?
I am sorry but I just don't get the point here.
With OS generally and with that horrible box you have just reviewed.
Industrial, and hopeless, my Antec 192 is 10 times more functional. And running XP, thanks a lot.

This has potential if you want to increase your storage size and use a "new" product to handle your backups automatically. Personally I like tried and true products but as I said this has potential. However the ability to create websites or web sharing, web mail and sharing of your files and data as well as some more central control and security would be a good addition. Might even make it worth while getting all the necessary kit for. One of the reasons I think the G33 based board was not included is the fact that the drivers require compatibility with Windows SERVER editions not XP or Vista Drivers, therefore the G33 and ICH9R chipset not having drivers released for SERVER products as yet causing issues.

This is one of the major issues with WHS so do be very careful of which MoBo you choose it is most critical as you may wind up not having functionality such as USB2.0 due to lack of SERVER compatible drivers.

Re: Windows Home Server – Part 2

Interesting point warren13. I hadn't considered that server drivers wouldn't be available for the board.

Still, that's just a minor niggle. No AHCI just means if you add a HDD you do one reboot. Big deal.

Re: Windows Home Server – Part 2

Just to let everyone know - I was speaking to auspcmarket and they have now changed their spec to include the board change I mentioned, so hot swap should work with this unit.

I have updated the review.

Did they offer you a consultant's commission? They should

Thanks for both parts 1 & 2 Glen. I've only got two machines running at home, so I figure I'm not really in the market. Central handling of TV recording might make me think again, if it gets built into some future version.

Re: Windows Home Server – Part 2

I only have 3 PCs but I'm considering it - the automated backups are the clincher for me.
