Please excuse my numbnuttedness, but, my files regarding this install (www.bmpbargains.biz/mce_epg.htm) have .config at the end. So when I try to run them I get; Windows cannot open this file etc.
Can anyone offer this embarressed newbie help?

the config files are exactly that they contain the necessary data for the application ie timezone, xmlfile, paths etc
its dotnets stupid way of naming there config files, sure its not compulsory but good to follow suit.
you need to run the .exe files to get the epg going :)

An alternative is to use EPG runner which comes with its own installer, it's a real no-brainer and works well. It can be found here (http://www.epgrunner.net)
Cheers

aj - I can see what your problem might be - I had the same thing.
If you choose to keep going with TVHarvest and Quickguide, I added a little more detail to the process here (http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au/community/showthread.php?t=973)
Good luck and let us know how you get on :)

Thanks Guys,
There is no "CasPol.exe -s off" in my Framework 1.4322 folder. In fact there are no .exe files, only .exe.config This is an example. file:///C:/WINDOWS/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v1.1.4322/caspol.exe.config
as compared to what the guide says;
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Run CasPol.exe -s off (file:///C:/WINDOWS/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v1.1.4322/Run%20CasPol.exe%20-s%20off)
Whats goin' orn? Maybe I should go for something simpler...does it exist?

Yes, it's called EPGRunner (http://epgrunner.net/). Much easier to setup than TVHarvest/Quickguide and gives you a fully functioning TV Guide and is pretty close to perfect, does have the occasional issue.

I've got to chime in here and add that EPG Runner works too well on my setup. It really is set and forget :D

aj aj
did you read Step 5 in that link I sent to you ??
STEP 5 - Paste "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\caspo l.exe -s off" (everything inside the " ") into your Run application. (click your Start button and then the Run... icon) and press ok.
NB - Make absolutely sure the path to your caspol.exe is as shown - if not - change it to match yours! If it won't execute from the "run" command line - navigate to your :\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322 folder and execute "caspol.exe -s off" manually from there. The executable is caspol.exe (not CasPol.exe) - the rest ( -s off) is a switch that you have to add when you run the command.
Why not give EPGRunner a try ;)

I had tried an earlier version of EPG Runner but had some issues. I've now just loaded version 3.0 and it looks good.
Set and forget...hmmm..does it keep the guide updated automagically without rerunning it? If so how often does it pull a new update?

Mike, Unfortunately it seems that this is beyond my scope.
The installation notes quote things like "CasPol.exe" & "listing2.xml" which is fine, but when they dont relate to what I have in my quickguide folder and I have to alter filenames and extentions it is very frustrating.
Is there specific or general information/sites I can access to broaden my knowledge and skills so I can work with these types of installations?
The executable is caspol.exe (not CasPol.exe) - the rest ( -s off) is a switch that you have to add when you run the command.
Whats this switch?
Thanks everyone for your comments.
Cheers aj:)

Hi aj,
I really would recommend epgrunner. It's a simple msi installer (that works) followed by a 2 second step to tell it which city you're in.
Everyone with .NET installed has caspol.exe on there system. If you don't I'd suggest re-downloading it from MS and installing it then visiting www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) to get the latest fixpacks for it.
Just curious, when you're looking for all this stuff, have you got windows explorer set up to display all files and all extensions?
It sounds like some files are still hidden. XP hides operating system files and known extensions by default on a new installation.
Cheers,
Arkay.

Arkay,
Does EPGRunner automatically update its listing periodically or do I have to rerun it
to make this happen?

and I have to alter filenames and extentions it is very frustrating.Understood mate - no worries we can walk through it with you :)
First - have you tried EPGRunner yet? - if yes and it doesn't work for you or in case you want to persist with TVHarvest - try this to fix your caspol problem.
1. Open notepad (not word or wordpad) create a new file add the line:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\caspo l.exe -s off
(If like me you see a space between the "o" and the "l" above - dunno why - it must be a bug in this forum - there is no space)
2. Save that file to anywhere on your C drive as caspol.bat
3. With MCE closed, navigate to where you saved caspol.bat, (it's icon wil now be a cog and will say next to it it
caspol
MS-DOS Batch File
1KB
which means you can now execute it. Do that - execute it (single or double click dependent on how you have your windows set up) and it should run and do the job as intended.
If it doesn't and you have a path error - can't find etc. etc. (your shouldn't BTW) - try the following . . .
4. Open notepad again and in a new file add the line:
caspol.exe -s off
5. Navigate to your C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\ v1.1.4322 directory, in there you should find caspol.exe . Save your new batch file there as caspol.bat.
6. Making sure that MCE is closed, execute your new batch file - because it's in the directory where caspol.exe lives, it will execute it with the additional switches as mentioned earlier
If for some weird reason caspol.exe isn't in that directory, then go to your start menu, select "search", select "All files & Folders" and add caspol.exe to the file name field, select advanced options and make sure you set the search to run on your C drive and add a tick to cover all subdirectories. If you come up blank again then your dot net framework install is screwed and you'll need to uninstall and then re-install it and start this mprocess over again.
Good luck - let us know how that goes :)

Oz,
It's not automatic out of the box, but you can run it from "More Programs" via the remote or add a scheduled task in windows task scheduler to run c:\windows\ehome\dorunner.bat.
Set it to a frequency that suits you and you're done. You can also tell the windows scheduler to "Wake the pc up" to run the job..
Works like a charm.
Cheers,
Arkay.

YES! EPG runner is a goer! But I still feel the need to conquer TV Harvest/Quickguide. Can I do this with Epgrunner installed or should I wipe it and start again (with the new install instructions supplied)?
Again, thanks to all concerned:)

If I were you I would persevere and get TVHarvest/Quickguiide working. I now prefer
EPGRunner and am using that *but* in case it "goes away" for some reason either
temporarily or permanently it would be a good thing if you had a eadily available,
working alternative.
