Hi guy's, I just installed CTP 5308 and put on AVG free. It was all good until I tried to update it, I then got a bsod/memory dump and it wouldn't boot back into Vista. I got it working again by un-installing AVG.
Does anybody have a suggestion for a virus scanner for Vista (not norton)? I'm going to try a few more but I don't want to break it beyond repair next time.
Apart from that i'ts reeeeeally pretty and has some nice features but it's still far from finished. I'll be testing the Mediacentre bit out when I get home tonight. I'm be interested to see if it has support for the Compro DVB-T200/300 cards (doubt it).
Not sure on this one but I remember seeing something installed called "defender" which looked like an out of box virus scanner from MS...
Haven't had a lot of time to play with it though.
You might get lucky with the drivers for the TV card. Mine installed out of the box (Asus Tiger DVB-T x 2). Got everything except the Audigy driver which I had to find and install manually.
On a course this week though so have't had much time to play.. Did get MCE to tune some stations though but it has plenty of bugs at this release...
On other thing I notices is that many of the stupidities of other Windows OS's still exists...
The crappy dos box cut and paste mechanism for one..
I though Vista was a new OS written from the bottom up over the last 5 years? If this is the case why does it just appear to be XP with a new (and less intuituve) GUI?
Why compile the same rubbish on a new base?
Cheers,
Arkay.

Thanks for that. Defender is the new version of Anti Spyware not a virus scanner unfortunately.
I agree with the comment that it has many of the stupid parts of the other OS's, namely I use the Run command constantly and to do that it is usally a simple case of Start > Run > cmd or some other command, but for the life of me I can't find it anywhere!!! I'm either blind or slowly going crazy. I also just noticed that right clicking on the start button and clicking explore does nothing? Which is another thing I use regularly in windows. Oh well I will be doing more testing tonight when I get home from work. Yep that's right I have nothing better to do today at work than download and install Vista (read: boss is away)
Vista is not a new OS from the ground up - I don't think it was ever intended to be. That said, so much of it has changed from XP that it may as well be. But its certainly still based on the NT platform. Only apple completely rewrites/replatforms their OS every few years ;-)
"Defender" is the code name for the final release of the AntiSpyware product that MS bought from Giant (currently a free beta from microsoft.com). I heard that they were packaging an AV with Vista but I don't know if it has surfaced yet.

IMO avast is the best free virus scanner you can get, but don't know if it works with vista yet, as i can't even get the feb CTP to install correctly yet!

What error's are you getting? I tried to install it on a number of machines but it only worked properly on the one I'm testing at work, it kept failing with non specific error codes and then whinged that there wasn't a suitable partition to store temp install files.

hehe, yeah writing down the error code would have been a good idea
i will have another attempt at installing it later and see if i can get something more specific...
Thanks monster I'll give it a go.
But on to the good stuff, I installed it on my media center pc on a different hdd and to answer my question before, it does indeed support my compro dvb-t300 and it even scanned all the local UHF channels without a problem. BUT when I started to watch a channel media center froze but the computer seemed to still be going. I'm going to play some more and try to get it a bit more stable and maybe an epg.
Vista got all my drivers (even my analogue tuner card although the picture is a bit jerky/choppy) once i got it connnected to the internet (which is hard work when you have 2 wireless devices that vista don't support)
I eventually got it (The old build had a bug that made it impossible for me to connect to the internet)
i wouldn't be bothered getting a anti-virus program as ie7 runs in protected mode making it really hard to get viruses in the computer
also run is accessed in Start button/All Programs/Accessories/Run
