What drivers for 5200?

Installed Vista RC1 5600 - what drivers do I need for the NVidia GeForceFX 5200? It's a 128MB AGP8x which you'd probably guess anyway. The drivers which Windows installs by default are pretty crappy, and no way do games even play. Plus DVDs stutter like there's no tomorrow, and the XP ones do not work.

I looked around, is this them?

Re: What drivers for 5200?

Well only for the time being. You're not a smartarse, but - it isn't 10 years old as I have checked.

However they (NVidia) did say they were supporting it in Vista and it works. And DirectX9 was introduced in December 2002.

So why does a card introduced in 2004 not work with Aero for DVD burning (which does a brilliant job) but one in 2003 does?

See the table below of the FX5200...

Codename NV30 Created 2003 Entry-level GPU GeForce FX 5200 series
GeForce FX 5500
GeForce PCX 5300 Mid-Range GPU GeForce FX 5600 series
GeForce FX 5700 series
GeForce PCX 5750 High-end GPU GeForce FX 5800 series
GeForce FX 5900 series
GeForce FX/PCX 5950 DirectX version 9.0b

not compatible

compatible

Don't ask why I did that.

Re: What drivers for 5200?

I finally got it to work with the DVD aspect...set the decoder (video) as Cyberlink PowerDVD7 and (audio) as Microsoft MPEG1/1

Re: What drivers for 5200?

im glad you got it working, but seriusly, the new vista driver doesnt support your card anymore, Id say its very borderline for use in vista, honestly a 7300 or a x1300 (which i have) are awesome use no power and support hardware acceleration for dvd playback and decode x264 on the fly

Re: What drivers for 5200?

I noticed after the 35mb download. Looks like a new video card, hard drive and an extra 1G RAM is in order.

I created a DVD with DVD Maker and it looks great.

Re: What drivers for 5200?

that is a pretty old card, Areo does require a fair bit of power to push it around properly.

A cheap upgrade is definatly in order ( specially as you hinted you wanted to play games on it ) Personally for games I would give vista a wide berth for a little while, its probably ok but nothings written with it in mind.

as for media center what are you using Aero for ?? turn it off its a resource hog behind VMC

Re: What drivers for 5200?

Yeah but as I said it is only for now. Plus I don't think I can get a GeForce7 series like I wanted as they're pretty much all PCI-e aren't they, as I have AGP.

I turn it off for DVD maker and vmc. Plus some more RAM wouldn't be too bad, hopefully an extra 512MB.

Thanks for your input.

Re: What drivers for 5200?

Just a quick one for this, has anyone tried the Vista RTM for the 5200 with TV out? I tried this but just got grey lines... I haven't tried the new drivers, but don't want to tinker with my HTPC until I am confident that I will get it working.

Cheers - Scott
