I'm thinking of installing Vista RC1 5728 for MCE then update in June next year to Premium Home.
However I have a few questions which some of you may be able to solve:
- can I partition in Vista setup itself? - that is keep XPMCE2005 and have Vista - a 10GB partition as I am getting a new stick of RAM and video card and HD.
- How many times can you use one activation key and will MS accept it?
- And is it worth getting rid of XPMCE for Vista? Half my apps work like DVD Shrink, Videoredo, Nero but none of my games yet and some other music editing apps.
I've just set up an XPMCE/Vista RC2 dual-boot machine myself and, although Vista is capable of doing basic partitioning, I believe that a third-party app is needed to properly setup a dual-boot environment (I used Partition Magic).
You can just create another primary partition (15GB minimum) and install Vista all from within XP - it's really easy and works great.
The serial numbers for RC1 & 2 should be good for up to 10 PC's - I've reinstalled and reactivated my own copy numerous times with the same serial and haven't had any problems.
Whether you decide to keep your XPMCE installation is really just a matter of personal preference.
Although I like Vista alot, I have just changed my machine from a Vista-Only setup back to an XPMCE\Vista dual boot - mainly for stability and for the sake of familiarity.
Also, if any of my software doesn't want to play with Vista I can just reboot and use XP.
I will consider scrapping my XP partition completely once I upgrade to a Non-Beta version of Vista, but for the moment I'm really happy with the whole dual-boot setup.
