Broken Media Center?

I posted on here a while ago about my Vista media center being so slow it was unusable. I still havent found a workable solution.

My mate just set up a media centre box and is using a slower clocked 1.8Ghz Sempron, 256mb RAM and a GF4MX (not even Vista compatible) and he can watch TV and use his media centre just fine.

What gives!? My specs are as follows:

P4 2.4Ghz
768Mb RAM
80Gb WD Hard Drive
Radeon 9550 128Mb
Microsoft Remote

It should work swimingly, but whenever Media Center is launched it grinds to a halt, even the menus take ages to scroll through.

Can anyone help?

I have accidently posted this in the wrong forum - it should be in the beta one since i am using RC2

Re: Broken Media Center?

Hi,

Looked around for video drivers?
Does it grind to a halt just entering MCE or going straight to live TV?

Re: Broken Media Center?

Media Center is slow from the get go - it takes ages to even scroll through menus. I am using the latest catalyst drivers too - they're no help

Re: Broken Media Center?

whats your windows experience index?, can be found control panel/ system. see from my signature my older xp 2600 works ok but no where near as quick to boot/run as my main rig. you may be a little lite on for ram, vista seems pretty recource hungry compared to 2005

Re: Broken Media Center?

definitly sounds like a video driver problem.
Vista RTM has been out for almost a month. There was a million updates from RC2 to RTM. So please try on RTM before everyone tries to assist you to fix the problem.

Sorry to be blunt, but RC2 is not final, and had many bugs, that is why is wasn't RTM.

Re: Broken Media Center?

It will be good if all of us had RTM but unfortunately we don't and cannot download it from internet.

I have a bit faster pc and I am running rc1 media centre it is slow but is usable. So it is probable the drivers.

I have been running RC1 happily until the mpeg2 decoder expired and therefore cannot watch live tv so I uninstalled and I am waiting for Vista to be released so that I can purchase it. The pc is now off until vista is available for purchase.

I have been trying to download rc2 from torrent unfortunately most are fake or vista will be out before I download it. Why they had to put the darn time limit on the mpeg2 decoder and because I have 64bit I cannot use Nvidia Purevideo trial to at least give me another month. Oh well

Re: Broken Media Center?

All Beta and Release Candidate builds did the same thing on my rig. The RC Builds lasted about 20sec then just froze completely.

the Beta Builds at least let me on for more then 20sec, but was so slow and problamatic that I couldn't be bothered with it.

On the other hand, every single test machine at my workplace has run it just fine with similar specced machines as yours.

It's most likely a mobo or video driver issue. again, your not going to get too much assistance now that RTM has been released. the driver support is FAR AND AWAY better in RTM.

But if your really really keen to use RC2, then i would search the net for all your latest Vista drivers for your pc components and get More RAM!
1Gb is bare min for Vista really.

Re: Broken Media Center?

Thanks for all who replied - I appreciate it. I am also aware that RC2 is not the final copy of Vista, but it is my only legal one for now - so I will keep using it until I can afford to purchase a copy.

My experience score is 2.2 - and is low becuase of my lack of RAM and fairly ordinary video card.

I managed to fix the issue anyway. it seems that Media Centre wasnt switching resolutions when it started, and so continued to opperate in a stupidly high resolution. Adjusting the resolution to a healthier 800x600 in the MCE setup fixed the situation and now everything seems to work fine.

Again, thanks to those who helped
