The Mystery of the Screen That Turns Off

I thought the title would make the problem sound more exciting....

So, I'm running Vista RC2 and have this odd, recurring problem. Often (but not always), if I go to main menu or one of the sub menus (e.g. Music), my LCD TV goes into standby! Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, did you find a solution?

I've tried the obvious - made sure my power settings are set so that the display never turns off. I'm at a bit of a loss, otherwise!

Oh yes, I'm connected to my TV via DVI.

Cheers,
Rich

This may be a bit off the wall, but are you sure its not something else in the room emitting an IR signal eg faulty light globe etc, try covering the screen reciever with tape and see if the problem continues

Thanks for the response, rjlloyd. I thought of that, but it's the same remote that I use for MCE2005 (harmony 880) and the same symptom doesn't occur there.

As an additional note, it also does it when I pause live tv or dvd. Hmmmmmmm....

Re: The Mystery of the Screen That Turns Off

Dude, it might be your video card drivers. Do you have Vista-ready drivers or are you using old drivers? Try updating.

This sounds similar to the problem I had where the TV would only pick up the PC signal if the TV or PC was turned on first (can't remember which). Updating the drivers fixed that.

It is perhaps a problem with the drivers handling the DVI output properly.

Yeah I'd say it's a DVI issue. Try using VGA if you can and see how that goes. Or check for newer or older drivers and see how they go.

My guess is that the monitor is suddenly detecting something odd with the DVI signal and going black. I hate DVI, such a hype and so many weird issues.

Cheers

I'm using nvidia 96.85 drivers and DVI output to plasma screen. Were these the same drivers you used?
I've got a similar problem with my screen going black and no signal flashing. Are there any other drivers that work better?

Re: The Mystery of the Screen That Turns Off

I'd give 96.33 a crack, they have been reported by many (myself included) to be by far the best and most trouble free for Vista at the moment, they fixed flickering MCE menus, gave me full range of resolution options so I can run at 1366x768 and tv is very smooth.
