nvidia drivers and vista

Since rolling to RTM a few days ago I have been having massive problems with the screen flashing in MCE, it occurs whenever there is a menu transition effect, or an overlay drawn on screen (such as volume control appearing while watching a video) Curious if anyone else is having this problem? I am running on an nvidia 6600GT.

It is very reminiscent of the flashing menus problem in the way it manifests itself, which occured in MCE 2005 and are well documented around these forums, when using nvidia drivers higher than 77.79

I want to try roll back to an earlier version, perhaps even 77.79 (not even sure if these will work with Vista at all)

Re: nvidia drivers and vista

Been doing more reading on this, and it seems the Vista RC1 drivers are the most trouble free, fastest and also include the control panel. Hopefully hardware acceleration will be back with purevideo too, it looks abysmal without it.

IE these ones http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_96.33.html

Havent tried with RTM but to save you the hassle, Purevideo doesnt work with the RC1 drivers under Vista RC2.

Re: nvidia drivers and vista

hmm thanks for that. any idea if the RC1 drivers work ok with WinDVD 8? That is the combination I am going to try out tonight...

I have had some teething issues with Vista, but fully expected them too. Hopefully I can work my way through them, as I don't really want to roll back to 2005.

2005 wasn't without it's own issues too, so I guess it's a case of which one ends up annoying me the least

Re: nvidia drivers and vista

benneh, just a quick question. I have an Nvidia 6600 card, not the GT and I can't complete the pc rating without a bluescreen and reboot. Have you had any problems doing the system rating in Vista?

cheers

Re: nvidia drivers and vista

woohoo! 96.33 sorted out all my problems, no more flashing screen and 3D seems to be running faster too (though I haven't actually tested this)

Also the built in vista decoder is working excellent now, better than purevideo largely because purevideo seems to be only running in software mode.

not brave enough to test WinDVD 8 yet, until I can schedule an official outage on the box

I just ran a rating test on mine and it wasn't an issue (got a whopping 4.2 )

If yours is crashing when you run the test, it's possibly because the test will stress your hardware a little. Overheating etc may causing that result?

Re: nvidia drivers and vista

Thanks for that but my BSOD is caused by a dodgy nvidia driver nvlddmkm.sys to be precise. There's a fix but it has a number of issues as well.

Thanks again
