LLTD Responder for XP now available as a hotfix

Those of you who are networking their Vista PC's will have noticed that vista can generate a fairly detailed network map. Vista accomplishes this by using the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol. You may have also noticed that your XP Home/Professional PC's do not show up correctly in the map. Windows XP doesn't come with the LLTD protocol installed.

Up until recently, the LLTD download for XP was only available for Vista beta testers registered in the connect program. The good news is, it is now available as a hotfix from MS. You will need to ensure that your XP pc's meet the spec's outlined in the following link, and you will need to contact MS to obtain the hotfix. (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the file here)

I've just installed it on my MCE2005 box and an XP embedded box without any problems (so far).

Now, the vista PC, MCE PC and embedded PC all show up in the network map as well as my switch and router.

It's not essential that you install the LLTD protocol, but it does enable one extra feature of Vista.
