I recently installed Vista RC2 build 5744 and evrything works including my HDA X-Plosion card which wouldn't work in any other build even with some driver signing trickery. However, I have a problem when Vista tries to rate my pc's performance. It get's about half way through then the screen goes black for about 2-3 minutes and it flashes a blue screen then reboots.
I can just see the file name it is complaining about, I can't catch all of it but it starts with nvl and it's a dll file.
I've sent the error report to MS but has anyone seen this or have a solution?
Machine specs are in my sig. I'm thinking it may be my new AMD X2 cpu because system rating has worked in previous builds before I got the new cpu.
cheers

No it's not your CPU. I have the same problem with an Intel Celeron. It is a definite problem with Vista 5744. That's why I went back to 5600.
It is possible driver issues are at fault with your video card. Try removing your video card drivers and see what happens with the generic MS ones. Maybe that's the issue (maybe!!!)
Did you send an error report to MS to tell them about it and see what they can do with your system specs? Actually check Event Viewer (Right-click Computer > Manage > Event Viewer) and see if that can give you any help on it.
Thanks for the reply. I have sent the error report to MS and tried the latest Nvidia Vista Beta Drivers as well as the generic MS ones but still no go. I'm convinced it has something to do with an Nvidia driver somewhere in the system not specifically the video because I have an NF3 motherboard which is all Nvidia.
As for reverting to an older build I think I might just wait until the final release, I'm sick of rebuilding my pc whenever a new build comes out trying to get it stable.
Thanks again for the advice

OK I have done the research for you and I have found that Nvidia know about this problem. They are working on a solution for this which I have contacted them about.
Put on the Sidebar, use the CPU meter and then see what your CPU gets to. If it gets to 90-95% plus then it's possible it is a CPU issue as well. But then again, it shouldn't really affect the CPU because you're using an AMD X2 4600, should be fine.
Thank you again for your effort's, rep points are on the way.
Don't stress too much about it though I will still probably wait for the final release of vista. But with the release of Mediaportal's tvserver I'm torn between focusing on that or vista!

I tried running the rating system. Guess what? I got the blue screen too. It dumps some memory and then restarts. When Vista comes back on it says it recovered from a serious error.
And I use an Intel Celeron and ATI Radeon, completely different from your setup, so we can shift blame from the video card and CPU now. Your motherboard isn't a Gigabyte like mine, a DFI so its not the mobo. Plus I'm running Vista RC1 5600. What sort of RAM you using (brand)?
I'm using a 1gb stick of transcend and a 1gb stick of accutek (no-name) both are DDR400 running at T1 timing and the system is not overclocked. Mis-matched RAM could be the problem, it took me a long time to get 2 sticks of RAM working happily in that board. DFI are notorious for being very picky when it comes to RAM. I'm replacing the motherboard in the near future so I'll test with that.
The error occurs on mine when it is doing the multimedia playback capabilities part of the test which is about half to three quarters through if that is any help. I'm slowly narrowing it down to a driver, codec or combination of both.
I'll keep on searching because Vista is growing on me by the day and I'd like to change over to it when it's released, considering I'll get the Ultimate edition for free and it's just so darn pretty!

Oh ok it's not Corsair then. Faulty memory I'd supect and at mis-matched RAM that could definitely be it. Try taking the other one (Accutek) out and see what happens.
I get it straight away about 3 seconds in. I mean it is in beta still so we can't expect it to be perfect. I have a feeling on mine it is problematic video drivers. I can probably get a photo of what mine does and see if it looks anything like yours.
I'll try without the accutek ram on the weekend, I can't be bothered pulling the media centre apart right now I also may have another motherboard by then as well so I can try that as well.
