Newbie Setup Questions

I am new to the whole MCE thing, my end goal is Vista MCE in the lounge room, pumping out HDTV. I have all the equipment and am hurriedly trying to get up to speed on the technology. I have been running Vista MCE 5600 and now 5728 and have got the basics up and running, HDTV channels and EPG. I now want to know how people run their systems. Key questions i have are:

1. Do you shutdown you MCE daily, weekly, monthly or just use the Stand By option?
2. Do u use auto logon to windows?
3. Can i easily access my movie server (WinXP Box with 1TB of xvids) from within MCE
4. Are there any gotchas for us newbies?

There are heaps more questions but will try and work through these over time. Appreciate any help as WAF is critical with this project.

Re: Newbie Setup Questions

HI there Osiris,

1. Never shut it down. Ever.

2. See 1. (But no)

3. Yes, Mapped Drives etc no probs. Just add folders/drives to My Videos.

4. HDTV reception issues, decoder issues, guide setups, plasma vs LCD etc, pixel mapping, 50 Hz vs 60Hz, what TV tuner to choose, what video card, when is HDTV actually real HDTV, the list really does just keep going....

But that why we're !!!!

Sounds like you're on the right track though, see you around the forums!!!

Cheers
TiggerK

Just one other small 'gotcha'...MCE can be both more expensive, addictive and damaging to relationships than a $2000 a day meth-amphetamine habit...have fun

Re: Newbie Setup Questions

Thank's guys! appreciate the comments, the HDTV issues are just starting to come out, When I watch/record Ten and Nine HD, the screen has this little glitches where parts of the screen pixelate for a split second. Guessing it could be signal strength or the hardware can't handle the stream....

Another question though for all you MCE seasoned Pro's.....am i better off just using MCE 2005 for the next 6 months then looking at Vista. I'm a sucka for new technology and that's why I've gone to Vista first but I'm starting to feel like I'm in for a world of pain.....or am I just going to get that also with MCE 2005.

There are many people here with a lot of experience to help you with MCE2005.

Vista is a different kettle of fish.

It really depends if you want to run at the leading edge. Always plenty of scope to do so and help others with what you find.

There is plenty to learn with XP MCE that is common to Vista. The difference is that there are more people here able to help currently on XP.
