Poor quality IR reception

I have a 360 elite and just the standard remote control that I got of ebay for $10. The reception is quite poor though it almost needs to be pointed directly in front of the IR receiver. Does the xbox have a poor quality receiver or is the remote poor quality? I'm think of buying a Logitech remote but don't want to spend the $$$ then have to hold it in front of the box in order to work it
