Has any one (in Australia) connected the Xbox360 via VGA to a 1080p LCD TV at 1920*1080?
I have a Samsung M8 that does 1920*1080, but when I configure my xbox360 (latest dashboard update) (connected via VGA) to 1920*1080, the tv switches itself off - lower resolution (it works fine) ,ive also tried different brands of VGA connector, and different Xboxes thes also just cause the TV to turn off.
Ive also tried the Xbox on a 46" LG 1080 , the Sony Bravia x series 46, and a 46" Sasung M8 none of these worked either.
I spoke to Samsung they didnt help much, said it was Microsoft Fault. Ive spoke to Microsoft they said they are investigating it.
I see on some other forums from the States that a Westinghouse work at 1920*1080 with the Xbox360, but are there any 40" LCD sold in OZ that work?
This is of course not supported by the tv (offically) but it does have 1920x1080 pixels. It looks fantastic! However I have an issue when I switch back to component (720p, 1080p doesn't work on my TV over component) as soon as I plug the VGA back in, it says "out of range!" which is ANNOYING because it was just working FINE.
Any hoo.. if I give it a few days of running over component and switch back to VGA it works again - odd.
All in all it works, and even worked before the "spring" update. The spring update did make it look 100% BETTER because of the way it handles the brightness/washed out colours etc.
Ok , I now have 1920*1080 from xbox360 via vga to my Samsung 40 81DB.
What I had to do was put a powered KVM (keyboad/mouse/video) switch box between the Xbox and the TV. - the KVM must boost the vga signal coming out of the Xbox slightly.
Ive tested componet at 1080P as well, and personally I think the VGA signal is far better, the King kong HD DVD takes on a near 3d look the picture is so good.
ps Microsoft refused to post anything on their site as Im using Third party hardware, Samsung tech support totally useless in helping in this matter

I was running 1080p via component to my TV. It looked better but I thought the framerate would drop too much in games.
MCX it wouldnt matter I guess, full resolution would have been nice (if my TV had more pixels).
I didnt know you could use component to do 1080p, only VGA. I guess the latest dashboard update allowed it.
.....shaking head. Nigel, nigel. The whole 480 i/p, 576 i/p, 720 i/p, 1080 i/p all started specifically as component video standards some 25 - 30 years ago. The old broadcast quality Sony Betamax VCRs actually had component out up to 1080p about 20 years ago.

I actually thought the 360 wouldnt output to component because I heard originally there was some patent dispute over outputting to a HD resolution via component.
Similarly to the 360 not upscaling DVD's because of patents (whether legitimate or not).
Anyway thanks extreme, I didnt know component has been out for so long. I am not old enough to remember betamax in either case ;-)
Correct me if im wrong but the xbox360 can output 1080p via componet for games, dashboard etc but is restricted "legally" to (although capable of) only outputting 1080i when HD-DVD movies are played.
But over VGA there is no such restrictions so therefore the xbox360 will (can) output 1920*1080 via VGA when play HD-DVD movies

No. There's not restriction enabled yet. But if there was you couldn't get 1080 i or p from an xbox without and HDMI output, yes that means if the HDCP restrictions ever kick in you can't get 1080 i or p from either component or VGA, but thats only for DVD-HD, oh yeah, with the restrictions the audio will come out of the HDMI cable only, the stereo RCA's and the optical will aslo be disabled.
Basically that means if you have a non Elite 360 when and if the HDCP flag is enabled while watching a DVD-HD then all you will have is a very expensive brick that gets hot and spins plastic discs around really fast.

Manufacturers have agreed not to turn on the protection flag until at least 2011 and are considering delaying the introduction of the flag even later than that to avoid negative consumer sentiment. (some question whether it will ever be turned on - see the removal of DRM from some iTunes songs as an example)
Until then, HDCP is just a future proofing feature. If I bought a TV today I would make sure it supported HDCP since I would expect a TV to *last* more than 10 years. However, i reckon XBOX360s will be superceded before I care too much about HDCP. So current XBOX360 owners, I wouldnt worry too much!
Back on topic, I think its really worrying that no Sony/Samsung/LG 1080p panel owners have posted about getting 1080p running from there XBOX360. I thought that last dashboard update was supposed to be the bee's knees???
