A lot of people claim that the newer drives are quieter, and it depends on which manufacturer made the drive. Personally, the drive in my falcon based arcade xbox 360 is quieter, but still sounds like a jet engine taking off while gaming. From a media centre point of view, the drive spins much slower and much quieter when watching dvds. The cpu even shuts down some of the cores so that it runs cooler and quieter.
One thing that it is missing is the ability to play divx/xvid videos through the media centre interface. It can play these though through its own dashboard. But this feature is also rumoured to be added some time in the future.

The arcade is the same beast as the pro with a plastic plate covering the hd connector, and no chrome detailing around the dvd drive . They *should* all be hdmi by now. So.... yes to all your questions. But buying the hd separately is ridiculously expensive.
