I am running Pure Video (until I get around to getting Power DVD SE) too. There is a bug where playing DVD that it will drop the S/PDIF output (and pump through stereo). As well as the open the power Dvd window solution you can(while the dvd is playing):
click green button on the remote to get the media centre menu
settings
DVD
audio
(and I don't have a dvd in the drive so this bit is from memory but you will find it)
Advanced audio settings
surround sound mode
select s/pdif
save and click back on the picture to full screen the dvd.
If you pause the dvd you will have to do it again, so don't get pure video. But if you have, and you watch DVDs as rarely as I do, it will be a work-around while you keep forgetting to get a better codec.
