It appears to be working in VMC as it says it's active when I set it to the default but still no sound to the receiver. My hope was that I would use my fancy new receiver to (eventually) decode the new HD audio formats it supports via HDMI 1.3a when I upgrad to BluRay. I understand you can only get these via HDMI and not via SPDIF. Hence why I want this to work.
ok, read the manual very carefully...when it talks about HDMI, does it say its a Switcher or a Repeater???

Pretty much, If the amp is a HDMI Switcher, it will NOT accept ANY HDMI Audio...zip, zlich, nada.
If the Amp is a HDMI REPEATER then it should be doing the sound..

I have the same problem...spent over $1000 on a 6.2 setup, made sure i got a HDMI amp, and i needed to buy an external sound card to get an optical/coaxal connection to the amp...

Does you TV sound work on HDMI??? That at-least lets you know the HDMI Audio is working...
