Re: Myth Re-visit and HDTV

It's been my experience that if it works in XP it'll work in Myth. Recording of DTV is only dumping the stream to the HDD so if it works in Windows it should work in Linux without fault. The only thing effecting that would be drivers but I'd think if it works for SD, HD should be no problem.

Playback sounds like the real issue. There's a few things that may affect that. The video card being one of them though I doubt that would be the issue if it works in XP.

3 that I can think of would be:

1. HDD and/or filesystem type. Might be effecting the speed at which the stream is coming from the disk. Something to look into. Try some file copies and see what disk transfer rates you are getting. (Mind you it'd have to be really slow to stop you playing a single HD stream).

2. What settings are you using for deinterlacing in Myth? Some of them can be very processor intensive. What is your CPU utilisation when trying to play HD?

You can figure is out by opening a shell and using the command "top" or vmstat before running Myth and playing a HD clip. Top gives you real time stats. I would probably use "vmstat 1 60 > cpu.txt". That will record data every second for 60 seconds into a file called cpu.txt. The last 4 figures on the right of the output give you cpu utilisation, whether it's a user or system process as well as the idle time and wait time (time the CPU spends idle waiting for other events like disk requests etc). That could give you more of an idea of what is happening.

Try different deinterlace methods and see what difference it makes.

3. Audio drivers. SD/HD has AC3 audio used in some broadcasts. It might be that your audio driver is struggling with these causing problems that only present in a HD stream (due to higher bandwidth).. maybe.

Some things to look at anyway.

You also say that your Myth frontend is unable to play HD. Are you using 2 machines (one back end, one front?) It could be a networking issue if that is the case.

Can you post your exact specifications of the rig(s)?

Cheers,

Arkay.
