I don't know a whole lot about 945 in linux, but I do think that is probably where your problem lies. A quick search around the Ubuntu or other linux forum will tell you more. Nvidia seem to be the only brand that are able to make the full capabilites of their cards available to the linux user. You don't need to spend a whole lot to do HD in Myth, I'm using a GF6200, something similar should cost no more than about $50.
But definately check if the Intel linux drivers are up to the job first.
