MS Exchange Server (SQL too?) does this (at least 5.5 did). It supposedly says, "I'll hang on to the RAM & pass it out when it's needed." Problem is (well, was) that it just wouldn't release it & you'd be using the pagefile despite the massive amount of RAM in the server. In Exchange 5.5, a reg hack was found to limit it & it worked so much better. Without the hack, the server would be so unresponsive.

One thing I use in old low end machines with XP on them is RAM Idle. You can get a significant boost in machines with a lowish amount of RAM (usually something like 256 or 384MB).

I wonder if anyone's tried something like RAM Idle in Vista?
