MedialPortal 1.0, a GPL licensed Media Centre alternative that has been five years in development, has been released for Windows XP, MCE2005 or Vista. The final release has ironed out a number of bugs in the earlier release candidates, but functionally, little has changed. MediaPortal plays DVDs and records TV programmes via DVB-T, DVB-C, DVB-S and analog TV. It supports TV cards with multiple tuners and uses a electronic programme guide based on the XMLtv project. The Royal Navy and BAE Systems have announced their implementation of ‘Windows for Submarines’ is complete ahead of schedule. Windows boxes on Ethernet LANs are now in control of the UK’s nuclear-propelled and nuclear-armed warship fleet.
