Setting up your Windows Home Server as an Email Server is fast, easy, and best of all; it is totally FREE! The best part about is that you can use your Microsoft given WHS hostname as your email address (yourname@xxxx.homeserver.com). There are many commercial packages out there that can accomplish this task very well and some of them even offer a free version for those of us with little money. However, for easy installation and configuration, I recommend using hMailServer. hMailServer is very...

There are more uses for your WHS then you can shake a stick at; whatever that may mean. The latest endeavor is using your Windows Home Server as an Internet Proxy. I personally use my Windows Home Server as a proxy to be able to view sites that my company blocks access to. Setting up a proxy can also allow you to control web content served in your home. If you have a child, you can block sites or even keywords to keep pages from being served. With that said, there are a lot of proxy solutions...

Released only last week in the UK, PlayTV has already shipped 85,000 units. That’s quite a good number considering that only around 9,000 pre-orders for the device were placed before its release. If things go well for Sony, PlayTV could eventually land a big footprint on media hub history. And while the Go!View service is already avaiable on the PSP, the PlayTV pushes the handheld’s capabilities further by allowing PS3 and PSP owners on-the-go viewing via Remote Play. Currently, PlayTV...

Using a combination of Adobe Air and the open source Flex framework, DIRECTV will stream the Sunday showdowns and also deliver game highlights, statistics, and real-time scores via a desktop app or Web browser. The open source XBMC project has released their ‘Atlantis” media center beta. A few of the new features included in this beta release: Cross platform support for Linux, Mac OS X (Leopard & Tiger), Windows and Xbox New default skin “PM3.HD”, a high-definition tribute to Project Mayhem III for non-Xbox users. So, you’ve got your shiny PS3 and 60-foot mega-telly. That probably means you’ve also got some form of Freeview in your lounge/bedroom/multimedia toilet too. Let’s be honest, with a set-up like that it’s hard to imagine anyone who won’t have access to the lavish blob of pixilation we loving call standard-def digital television. Obviously then, it’s the ‘R’ aspect of Sony’s PlayTV PVR we’re all likely to be interested in. Still though, in...

While the earth-bound internet goes through its growing pains, we’re already looking to the heavens. The Interplanetary Internet, or InterPlaNet (www.ipnsiq.org), aims to redefine the term “Wide” Area Network by creating permanent links between the planets to aid in the exploration of the solar system. at the mercy of inadequacies of the physical and data layers – which is where the most work needs to be done to create the next-gen internet. Modern high-speed networks offer...

Recently there has been some buzz as to what Microsoft has up their sleeves for Windows 7, the next version of Windows after the somewhat botched Vista release. Some of the features seem to be mostly evolutionary from those of Vista. Most of the features, though, have yet to be announced. So, what should Microsoft focus on after they get Windows 7 out the door? Its already been established that Vista requires at minimum a 1.0GHz Pentium III and 1.0GB of RAM. For the sake of argument, it should be...
